The basis of the compliance system is the enrichment of product and substance records with compliance-oriented fields. This data should not be kept separately from the commercial product record; it should be maintained as an integral part of the same product record .

Critical design decision: composition analysis
Compatibility assessment requires the lowest-level material composition of the product. If a product consists of intermediates; intermediates consist of premixes; and premixes consist of raw materials, the system needs to automatically analyze this chain and calculate the final material concentrations.
This analysis is both slow and inaccurate when done manually. However, when automated, a change in the recipe instantly affects the compliance of all upper and lower-level products. This is where the system's true value lies.
