Sustainability and Carbon Compliance

The biggest area added to the compliance scope in recent years is sustainability data. This data is no longer part of voluntary reporting, but a condition of market entry . For exporters in Turkey, this is a directly binding issue: what determines is not the origin of the product, but the market to which it is offered.

Main frameworks

Frame What does he want? Source of the data
Ecodesign and Digital Product Passport Product identity, material composition, durability, repairability, carbon footprint, and end-of-life information presented in a machine-readable format. Product tree, material declarations, compliance records, lifecycle data
Border Carbon Regulation Reporting of embodied emissions of specific imported products and issuance of certificates in return. Production data, energy consumption, supplier emission declarations.
Deforestation Regulation Supply chain due diligence and geographic location data for specific commodities and products. Supplier records, batch traceability, origin documents.
Product carbon footprint Calculation and declaration of greenhouse gas emissions per product. Product tree, production recipe, energy and logistics data.
Corporate sustainability reporting Reporting of environmental and social indicators at the company level. Operational data, supply chain data

Common point: they all want the same data.

These frameworks have different names and timelines; however, the data they request largely overlap: what the product is made of, where it comes from, how it is manufactured, and what will happen to it at the end of its life cycle .

Therefore, the correct strategy is not to run a separate data collection project for each update, but to establish a single product database and generate each update as a view of that database . Once this database is established, the company doesn't need to start a new project when the next update arrives.

Level of preparation on the field

Research shows that most companies in Europe do not yet have the structured lifecycle data required for digital product passport compliance. The main reason is not the absence of data, but its fragmentation across disparate systems : material information in the product tree, supplier declarations in email attachments, and certifications in folders.

This finding also signals an opportunity: businesses that establish their data foundation early transform compliance from a burden into a market access advantage.
