Labeling is the visible face of compliance. It's the first thing looked at during inspections, the first thing checked at customs, and the first thing the customer sees. It's also where mistakes are easiest, because the label has to combine the requirements of multiple regulations on a single surface.
Scope
Hazard label: Product identifier, supplier information, pictograms, signal word, hazard and precautionary statements, nominal quantity and supplementary information.
Selection of precautionary statement: Choosing the appropriate statements to be included on the label according to regulations. Legibility of the label is a regulatory requirement; printing every statement is non-compliance, not compliance.
Conformity markings: Application of conformity markings required by the target market in the correct size and location; management of situations requiring a notified body number.
Mandatory information: Manufacturer and importer information, batch or serial number, usage instructions and warnings must be in the language of the target market.
Multilingual production: Producing the same label in different market languages; the need for multiple languages to be included on the same label in some markets.
Packaging size exceptions: Relaxed rules apply to small packages, foldable label solutions, and minimum font size requirements.
Transport markings: Hazardous material labels, directional arrows, and environmental hazard signs.
Label versioning: A record of which batch was released with which label version. This is critical information for determining the scope of the recall.
Digital labeling: Access to product information via QR code; maintaining consistency between physical label and digital information.
In the real business world
Labeling errors usually stem not from ignorance, but from an update getting stuck somewhere : the recipe has changed, the classification has been updated, but the label template in print continues to use the old classification. Or sales have started in a new market, but labels haven't been produced in that market's language.
The solution is to transform the label from a standalone graphic file into an output generated from compliance data . This way, the label changes automatically when the classification changes, and the printing of the old version is systematically prevented.
