Customer Profile, Permission and Preference Management
Make customer data, communication preferences, and personal choices transparent and manageable.
A customer profile includes contact information, addresses, language, currency, delivery preferences, interests, and other choices that influence the shopping experience. This information should be used to facilitate customer satisfaction; mandatory transaction data should be separated from optional marketing and personalization data.
Customers should be able to understand what type of communication they want to receive through which channel and be able to change their preferences. Not only the current status of permissions, but also when and with what explanation they were granted should be recorded.
Key areas of profile management
Name, contact information, and verification status.
Billing and delivery addresses
Language, country, currency, and time zone
Delivery, packaging, and communication preferences
Optional information such as interests, body type, or product preferences.
Default store, delivery point, or service area
Account security and connected devices
Types of permits
Email marketing permission
SMS or messaging channel permission
Permission to communicate by phone
Personalization and behavioral analysis preference
Preference for third-party advertising or measurement technologies.
Loyalty program and special benefits communications
Preference center
Instead of a single unsubscribe link, a preference center could be offered to the customer, allowing them to choose based on topic, channel, and frequency. Service communications, such as order and security notifications, should be clearly separated from marketing communications.
When permission is withdrawn, this should be reflected promptly in the relevant campaign and communication systems; the customer's preference should not be reactivated in different systems.
Data rights and account transactions
The customer can view and modify their own data.
Request to export account data.
Request to close or delete an account
Separation of legal and financial custody obligations
Identity verification and applicant verification.
Request process, status and completion record.
Data minimization
The purpose of each profile field should be explained; information not required for purchase or delivery should not be made mandatory. The timeliness of the preferences collected for personalization and whether they are actually generating value should be regularly evaluated.
Instead of collecting as much customer data as possible, manage it with clear purposes, valid preferences, and while preserving customer control.
