Packaging and Transportation Unit Management

Packaging is not only about physically protecting goods, but also about transforming them into a traceable object . In a well-designed system, each box and pallet is a transport unit with a known contents and a unique identity.

Scope

  • Creating transport units: Each box, pallet, or crate must be uniquely numbered and its contents must be identified in the system.
  • Nested structure: Boxes are placed on pallets, pallets are placed in containers, and this hierarchy is followed.
  • Packaging material management: Recording the consumption of cartons, pallets, stretch wrap, and filler materials used; generating packaging declarations from this data.
  • Packaging optimization: Recommending the most suitable carton size based on product dimensions; reducing empty space during transport.
  • Labeling: Printing the shipping label using a standard barcode structure and in the format required by the recipient.
  • Weight and volume calculation: Calculation of gross weight, net weight, and volume; input for freight calculations and vehicle planning.
  • Return packaging tracking: Monitoring the balance of returnable packaging such as pallets, crates, and drums on a customer basis.
  • Packing list: Generating and sending the shipment breakdown by parcel to the recipient.


Why is the transport unit critical?

When the shipping unit is not defined, the shipment is "a list of goods going to a customer". When defined, it provides information such as "this pallet has these boxes, and this box contains this quantity of this batch" .

This difference is crucial in damage assessment, claims of missing goods, recalls, customs inspections, and customer acceptance of goods. The buyer can complete acceptance simply by scanning the labels; disputes between the parties are resolved at the parcel level.
