The line is divided into hundreds or thousands of separate equipment cards.
Each segment has a separate card, a separate code, and a separate maintenance plan.
Result: Master data becomes bloated and unmanageable. Cards need to be reissued whenever a segment boundary changes. Reports for the entire line are not possible.
In practice, most organizations find a third way: they use the system with a single record, keeping the details in Excel files and in the memory of field teams . When an experienced line supervisor retires, a significant portion of the organization's infrastructure knowledge goes with them.
