The seller covers all costs of bringing the goods from their country of origin to the port of destination, including transportation costs, clearing for export and insurance of the goods.
This term applies to sea and inland waterway trade. However, CIF may not be appropriate if the goods are delivered to the ship in the normal container scenario – before being loaded onto the ship.
